The Quiet Evolution

Currently there is a quite evolution going on at radio. Things have changed and it is this writer’s opinion that they will never go back to the way it used to be.

In days gone by, independent releases and major label releases have basically been provided in the same medium. (I.E. the78, the 45, the 12” vinyl record, and now compact disk). When changes in the medium happened, they were relatively easy to identify because they were retail driven. When the Compact Disc came to be, we all switched to that medium, radio, and the consumer alike. The Indies sent a CD to radio so to did the majors … and the public bought a CD. Everyone was on the same page.

Not so anymore. Now the major record companies send their new releases to radio via “Digital Media Distribution System”. (I.E. thru the Internet as a digital file). Headed by Musicrypt, a Canadian Company, this system of music delivery is safe, simple, and instantaneous. (All of Canada radio will receive the latest ”Shania” single at the same time.)

For radio, it means no wrestling with envelopes, and poly wrap, no searching thru piles and piles of CD’s stacked up on a desk. They now receive an email to let them know that the new “Shania” single has arrived, or the latest “Alicia Keys” is on line and ready to be downloaded. The music director just needs to “click and listen”! It’s the “quiet evolution” and it’s happened very quickly and, because this change of format is not retail driven, it’s happened very, very quietly.

Over the past few months these are just some of the artists that have been sent out by “Musicrypt” in a digital format: Shania Twain,U2, Elton John, Fefe Dobson, Bryan Adams, Nelly Furtado, Gordon Lightfoot, Sum 41, Sara Mclauchlan, Motorhead, Ryan Malcom, Alicia Keys& Usher,Keshia Chante, Alan Jackson, Lonestar, Kenny Chesney, Avril Lavigne, Tracy Bird, Martina Mcbride, Brooks& Dunn, Wycliff Jean, Billy Talent and on, and on, and on…….

Most music directors I have spoken to, prefer receiving their new releases on line.

They unanimously agree it would make their life a lot easier if all the music they got was sent thru this system. So, where dose that leave the independent artists? Actually … it puts them in pretty good shape.

When you consider the CD manufacturing, design, and packaging costs, the postage charges, the envelope and press release fees; sending a CD to radio can cost the independent artist as much as $5.75. (That’s assuming you have access to an up to date mailing list!) DMDS can do the same for $2.95* per station… and it’s there in an instant!

Along with the wav. file, radio receives a scan of the artist, and or the group, bio information, record label copy, touring details, a link to the artists web site, and contact information. (There is no way an artist can send all this on his own for $2.95*.) Gone is the single CD, gone is the postage stamp, gone is the envelope, the mailing list and the week or so it takes to get to the station. When you think about it, sending music to radio has never been easier.

During the next few months radio and the independent artist will both be in a state of “transition”. Radio will be receiving more and more digital files and the Indies should be sending less and less CD’s. As far as servicing music to radio is concerned, we need to get the Indies on the same playing field … (a level playing field that is) as the major labels. To do this, we need to educate the Indie artist. We need to give them the facts and hard costs, and we need to this immediately.

It’s extremely difficult surviving as an Indie artist and they need every advantage they can get. This may be the “quiet evolution” …but we need to get the word out loud and clear.

"Missing Vehicle Mystery Solved" A Sad News Release:

If you haven't already heard, in mid-January the car belonging to the late Barry Newman was finally located by the RCMP with the help of a local diver. The vehicle had been missing for 5 months, going back to September of 2004, when Barry disappeared after threats of suicide to the local Crisis Line. Later at the beginning of October, Barry's body was located in the water by a boater on the mideast side of Saanich Inlet.

In January of 2005 the RCMP discovered Barry's car, after acting on a report of gas or oil rising to the surface of the water at the end of Cowichan Bay Government Dock. They subsequently recovered the vehicle from a depth of 30 feet. The VIN# proved the car's owner to be the late musician/publisher.

The vehicle had apparently been driven at high speed off the end of the dock, causing substantial damage to the front suspension. When the battered car was brought out of the sea, the apparent damage caused by its impact with the water revealed the mystery of how Barry met his untimely end.

Evidently upon impact, the windshield had been pushed out onto the hood of the car. Glass on Barry's clothing & an injury to his body are consistant with the damage to the windshield. Currents & tides must have carried Barry's body several miles before it was found & recovered. This brings to a close the sad story of our dear talented friend.

Barry Newman's creative legacy lives on with Cosmic Debris back issues, the website www.cvnet.net/cosmic that he created & also through his recorded music. A special memorial website can be viewed at http://barrynewman.homestead/index.html

Peace to you brother Barry!

A commemorative Cosmic Debris tee shirt with Barry’s picture is being designed & an annual Barry Newman Memorial Jam is also in the works. Donations to Barry's tribute fund "Friends of Barry" can be made at the Mill Bay Island Credit Union account # 1678887. Thank you all!

THE CITY-WIDE TSUNAMI RELIEF BENEFIT SERIES RAISES $5040.00 FOR THE CANADIAN RED CROSS!

HUSH – STEAMER’S – SUGAR – LOGAN’S – CENTRAL – LEGENDS – UPSTAIRS – LUCKY – DIEGO’S – DARCY’S

The City-Wide Tsunami Relief Benefit Series is now complete! Encompassing ten live music venues across the city of Victoria, and featuring over 35 individual musical acts, the series which took place from February 3rd to February 13th of 2005 raised $5040.00 for The Canadian Red Cross to support their efforts to provide immediate aid and long-term assistance to communities affected by this disaster! Overall attendance for the series is estimated at approximately 900 - 1000 people.

Series organizers Liam Lux, Dimitri Demers, and Scott Laming consider the series to be a success in many ways.....
“It has been an amazing example of cooperation and effort by a large group of people ranging from musicians to venue owners, and as far as we know, nobody else has done this. There have been hundreds, probably thousands of events around the world to raise money for those affected by the Tsunami just over a month ago, but to the best of our knowledge Victoria is the only place that has pulled together a coordinated city-wide series of events.”
A note on proceeds:

The proceeds from this series have been donated directly to the Red Cross of Canada. Every performer volunteered their time and talent. The organizers did not apply any administrative fees, and promotional costs were covered through sponsorship by Atomique Productions, Bosevus Productions, Metropol, Live Victoria, Monday Magazine, Nexus, The Zone 91.3fm, CFUV 101.9fm, and Canada Instant Print. Almost all technical production costs were covered by the hosting venues respectively.

The Red cross will use the funds provided for both immediate aid and long-term assistance in the relief, rehabilitation, and recovery phases of the disaster and will continue to work in the affected communities for years to come. After the initial relief phase, the Red Cross will shift the emphasis from direct aid to identification and support of community resources to rebuild for the longer term, including counseling, education, medical services and community health.

CRTC hearings on Satellite Radio

In November, Indie Pool spoke on behalf of Canada's unsigned artists at the CRTC hearings on Satellite Radio in Ottawa. Before we intervened, the argument against XM and Sirius receiving licenses to broadcast in Canada was that they wouldn't be subjected to the same Canadian Content (CANCON) rules that force Canadian radio stations to play Canadian music. We had a large petition in hand and gave the commission some unexpected input.

In a nutshell, I told them that Canada's indie artists have little to no hope of receiving any terrestrial (AM/FM) radio play, regardless of how talented they are. I said that as far as 95% of Canadian artists are concerned, CANCON is broken. CANCON's current rules do not require radio stations to play developing artists and as a result, CANCON is only helping our international stars (Shania, Celine and the like) get twice the radio play they would usually receive in Canada. Instead of Avril getting 5 spins a day on a station, she gets 10. Sadly, that's what CANCON accomplishes today.

Let me tell you, there were a lot surprised looks on a lot of faces. "Are you saying that 95% of Canadian musicians don't care about CANCON?" was the general reaction. I told them that until CANCON rules encourage or force radio stations to play developing artists, Canadian independent artists will have no vested interest in protecting CANCON. In our view, CANCON should do more than pad the profits of multi-millionaires and US based record companies.

That's why we support the applications for Satellite Radio service without any fear that CANCON will be hurt. We are seeking new avenues for independent artists to receive airplay and since Satellite Radio in the US plays a significantly higher proportion of independent music than regular radio does, we can only go up from here. We provided them with a list of hundreds of Canadian independent artists that currently receive airplay on Satellite Radio in the US, but still don't receive any radio play right here in Canada. It appeared as though the CRTC had never considered this viewpoint.

The CRTC is now deliberating the issue and is expected to announce its decision in April. The case is closed and nothing more can be done at this time. Most observers say it's a tough one to call, with about a 50-50 chance that satellite radio becomes licensed. If they do get licensed, expect them to legally broadcast in Canada in the fall. If they do not get licensed, expect to see the grey market satellite service in Canada continue to explode.

You should know that I am completely dedicated to pressing your case with the CRTC regardless of how their Satellite decision comes down. Over 20,000 Canadian independent recording artists are demanding change to a system that is clearly broken. We will be proposing modifications to CANCON rules that will encourage radio stations to play developing Canadian artists.

I will keep you up to date as things progress.

Cheers,

Gregg Terrence
President
Indie Pool Inc.

MAPLE BLUES AWARD

WINNER

DAVID GOGO "Guitarist of The Year" Ottawa, ON - Blues guitarist David Gogo has just been confirmed to appear with his band on CTV's "Canada AM" this Friday, January 14th at 8:50 Am to perform his hit single "Love In The City."

The Nanaimo, BC resident is in Toronto this weekend to attend the Maple Blues Awards at the Phoenix Concert Theatre on Monday, January 17th, where he is nominated for two awards, including "Entertainer of The Year" and "Guitarist of The Year", the latter of which he won in 2002.

"Love In The City", the first single from Gogo's acclaimed new Cd Vibe (Cordova Bay/Maple Music/Universal), is a track he co-wrote and that features Tom Wilson from Blackie & The Rodeo Kings and Junkhouse fame. The hit single cracked the Top 35 (BDS) at rock radio stations across the country and went to # 1 on CHWF (The Wolf) in his hometown, an impressive feat these days for a blues artist on an indie label. David Gogo is the first blues/rock guitar oriented artist to experience national success on the commercial radio charts since Jeff Healey, who makes a guest appearance on Vibe, and more recently, Colin James.

Gogo spent the better part of October and November 2004 on the road performing a nationwide theatre tour with the legendary Downchild Blues Band. He also headlined a string of his own dates throughout Ontario and Quebec while performing two sold out shows in support of Little Feat. Not one to sit idle, Gogo is preparing for another yet to be announced trek across the country as well as a trip to Austin, TX in March to attend the SXSW music conference, where he hopes to catch the attention of the American music industry. Europe is also in his sights for 2005 as the buzz at home has created interest overseas in seeing him return to perform on the European summer festival circuit.

2004 was not only a busy year for Gogo in preparation for the release of his own album but somehow between touring and the recording studio, he found time to make a guest appearance on Downchild's new Cd Come On In as well as popular Quebec singer Bob Walsh's latest release A Canadian Blues Rendez-Vous, recorded live at the 25th Anniversary of the Festival International de Jazz de Montreal.

David Gogo is currently hard at work re-mixing his second single "Cry Harder", a tune he wrote with Craig Northey (The Odds/Colin James). The song is set for a much anticipate release to rock radio in early February.

FACTOR's BACK!

OTTAWA, December 15, 2004 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla today announced a new investment of up to $192 million1 in arts and culture for 2005-2006. As a result, Minister Frulla is able to reassure the arts and culture community with a one-year extension of the Government of Canada's investment in arts and culture, known as Tomorrow Starts Today.

As a rule, a commitment such as this one would be made in the context of a federal budget. However, the Government of Canada has taken this exceptional step in order to allow recipients of this investment to continue their work without interruption. The Government of Canada will consider the longer term future of this investment in the context of the next budget.

This funding will continue to be strategically invested through support programs for the arts, publishing, sound recording, the export of cultural products, and for increasing the presence of Canadian culture on the Internet. As part of this investment, the Canada Council for the Arts will receive $25 million in order to maintain its increased level of financial assistance for artists and arts organizations.

"One of my priorities upon my appointment as Minister of Canadian Heritage was to secure this investment in arts and culture by the Government of Canada. Today, I am thrilled to make this announcement in advance of the tabling of the next federal budget," said Minister Frulla. "This investment has helped make our communities vibrant and interesting places to live, where arts and culture play a central role. It has also fostered a rewarding partnership involving our government, creators and cultural industries, and has given Canadians the opportunity to discover a wider variety of works that have sprung from the imaginations of our artists."

"During the most recent meeting of Federal-Provincial-Territorial Ministers responsible for Culture and Heritage, a resolution was unanimously adopted recognizing the positive impact of the federal government's investment in the arts and culture sector over the past four years. Today, I am pleased to be able to respond favourably to the wish expressed by my provincial and territorial counterparts", added Minister Frulla.

A list of recipients who benefit from the programs supported by this Government of Canada investment in arts and culture, as well as information on the scope of these programs at the national and international levels, are available on the Internet at: www.canadianheritage.gc.ca

RSFCO, established in 1964, and run by fans for fans, lists news about
the Stones first contract being up for auction, The Stones and Beatles
induction into the UK Music Hall of Fame, Marianne Faithfull on tour,
and other current items of interest to Stones Planet inhabitants.

Of Crowe's new release, the European-based RSFCO says:

"A new album by Canadian Allison Crowe (22 years) reached the record
market in time for the Christmas sales. This star is an absolute
outstanding singer, and her 'Shine A Light' by Jagger/Richards is the
whole album worth, but there are lot more, look here
(http://www.stonesplanet.com/allisoncrowe.htm).

Here's a link to the track, recorded by Allison Crowe and her trio
live-off-the-floor in a single
