The Quiet Evolution
Currently there is a quite evolution going on at radio. Things have changed and it is this writer’s opinion that they will never go back to the way it used to be.
In days gone by, independent releases and major label releases have basically been provided in the same medium. (I.E. the78, the 45, the 12” vinyl record, and now compact disk). When changes in the medium happened, they were relatively easy to identify because they were retail driven. When the Compact Disc came to be, we all switched to that medium, radio and the consumer alike. The Indies sent a CD to radio so to did the majors … and the public bought a CD. Everyone was on the same page.
Not so anymore. Now the major record companies send their new releases to radio via “Digital Media Distribution System”. (I.E. thru the Internet as a digital file). Headed by Musicrypt, a Canadian Company, this system of music delivery is safe, simple, and instantaneous. (All of Canada radio will receive the latest ”Shania” single at the same time.)

CD review - Reach
Jamie Rokeby-Thomas has just released her debut CD REACH.
The recording has an exceptional production with all the acoustic instruments being reproduced in pristine glory. Kudos to producer Jordy Sharp.
This is the kind of disk you like to play on a rainy Sunday. When you just want to kick back for an hour with a warm beverage and listen to some good tunes.
I met Jamie about three years ago, in the most unlikely place, Forth Smith, NWT.
She was an instructor at a youth fiddle camp hosted by Strings Across the Sky, www.stringsacrossthesky.ca/index.htm.
I was blown away by her energy and enthusiasm. She is the type of performer that can't stay still.
I had the pleasure of having her perform on a couple of tracks on my own CD "Ambiance". Even in the studio she bounces and dances around when she plays.
Happily, her CD REACH, reproduces all the energy of her live performances.
Skittles at Buckley Bay & Mischief in the Garden opens with an "Orange Blossom Special" style of lick and machine-gun-like mandolin and fiddle.
On Hardiman the Fiddler & Lisa McQueens, Adrian Dolan's (The Bills), warm sounding accordion is like a big hug. Victoria musician Niel Golden played the Tabla superbly. The tabla might seem to be an unusual instrument for this style of music but it resulted in a joyous fusion of rhythms and melody.
On Butterfly & The Talking Cat, Ken Hall gives the song a jazz style guitar feel.
John Reischman added the sweet mandolin melody.
Twenty Seven is my favorite song on the CD with its unusual time signature and lilting accordion in the background. Congratulations to Jaime for Reaching out and exploring this more avant-garde music style.
The CD features: Oliver Schroer - Five String Violin; John Reischman - Mandolin
Adrian Dolan - Accordion; Glen Manders - Bass; Andy Hillhouse - Guitar
Ken Hall - Guitar; Niel Golden - Tabla; Paula Kiffner- Cello; Calvin Cairns - Feet
I highly recommend that you go see Jaime RT if she is playing in your area. Until then... buy her CD, "It's the next best thing"

Joanna Finch is a uniquely entertaining singer/songwriter who swings smoothly between jazz/blues and original, contemporary folk. Her songs have been described as tender, biting, quirky and sensual. Her voice conveys spine tingling emotion and she is renowned for her captivating stage presence. Joanna's influences are as divergent as her writing style with comparisons made to Jane Siberry, Cole Porter and Tom Waites. Her vocal style has been said to resemble Alison Krauss, Edith Piaff and Nora Jones, depending on who's listening and what mood she's in.
Joanna's debut solo CD 'In The Arms of Morpheus' will be released this spring and showcases some of western Canada's most celebrated musicians including Juno Award winners, Zubot and Dawson, Buff Allen, Ken Lister, Miles Black, John Reischman, Ron Thompson, Blackie Du Bois and producer, guest guitarist Pat Coleman.

BARRY NEWMAN A New Age Man
Popular Vancouver Island personality, Barry Newman passed away tragically in mid-September. Barry was the founder/editor/publisher of the Cosmic Debris Musicians' Magazine & a talented songwriter & musician. He tirelessly promoted the Island music scene, giving unknowns a voice & helping seasoned artists become more established.
Unfortunately Barry had diabetes & had been in particularly frail health in the past couple of years. He also had psychological issues, which may have had something to do with the diabetes & the fact that he made a habit of abusing alcohol on occasion. Obviously this is not a good combination.
Newman was a complex, thoughtful being. He was a habitual writer/composer of poetry, prose, lyrics, essays & political comment. I have hundreds of smoky scrawled pages of his work dating back to the early 70's, to collate & catalogue. It is a massive task. Barry's empathy with humanity was truly heartfelt & he was terribly affected by the ongoing strife in the world.
