Minha Luz (My Light)

By Guy Langlois - December 2005

Some describe Fado as a type of blues. Do you agree?

O.k. sooo...Well
Fado is the soul of Portugal is the culture, the food the wine, the bitter and the sweet..... It's everything.
It does not pass judgment or segregate it just is. It is straight up, and very dramatic... to describe it one could go on forever......
I grew up listening to it in Portugal.... but not until later in my life was I able to connect at the deep level I needed to.

At the Vancouver Island Music Festival you mentioned that the music was dedicated to your mother. Can you tell me more about the connection of the songs and your relationship?

Some of the original songs are dedicated to my Grand mother on the Portuguese side, She started to write poetry in her 60's, beautiful poems,
She even won some Portuguese competitions and had her work read on the radio...anyways when I recorded my first album as well as the second one I felt compelled to incorporate her work into songs. They really lend themselves to the melodies we had written .It all came about very naturally
It feals like family to weave in her work with mine. I think she would be very proud.

What are the original songs on your CD, and which ones are traditional?

The original songs on the album are tracks Rio Guadafeo, Praia do Tonel, Dia De Vendaval and Anna's song written by Ken Hall.

Perhaps you can say why you picked the songs for the CD and what they are about.

Other songs that were chosen simply because we all connected with the material...you must make every song home for everyone to feel it and connect.

Who are heroes, musically?

I don't really have favorite artists.
I feel if there heart and soul is in it, how can one judge?
I adore many like LHasa, Amalia, Elis Regina, Ella, Bjork, to name a few....how can one choose you know?

There is only one way to describe this music. Beautiful!

Sara Marreiros delivers the passion of Fado in her latest CD, Minha Luz.

The CD opens with the title track "Minha Luz". Dan Weisenbuger's Guitarra solo was as bright as this unique Fado instrument.

Marc Atkinson and Adrian Dolan of the Bills perform their magic on "Lisboa Antiga".

I particularly enjoyed Sara's vocal styling on the Willie Nelson song, "Suffering In Silence". Even though it is done in a Fado style I can hear a bit of Patsy Cline.

Sara's band comprises of some of Victoria's best Jazz musicians. Ken Hall - Guitar, Nathan Gage - Bass, Kelby MacNayr - Percussion.

I have had the pleasure of seeing the Sara Marreiros Quartet five times over the past year. Theses musicians are as good live as they are in the studio.

If you have the chance to catch them live, take it. You won't be disapointed.

Mantras For Madmen

By David Brand aka The G-man - December 2005

Having the good fortune of seeing Hary Manx perform no fewer than 5 times since August including a stellar performance in Victoria at the Alix Goolden Hall where this CD was first released might seem to make the task of reviewing this sixth recording easy.

The show in Victoria featured the fine work of Steve Marriner on harmonica who blew the crowd away (pun intended) Emily Braden whose wonderful voice both with backing and lead vocals contributes so much and Niel Golden on Tabla all of whom appear on the CD.

Hearing the new songs live in such a setting as the Victoria Conservatory of Music's Goolden Hall made me wonder if the CD would have the same magic.Well, it does.

The production has that same live quality, if you close your eyes the musicians are right there with you.Like his previous work Harry continues to capture the duality of west and east and blend it into one.

Blues and Mantras, what a concept! I have a tremendous respect for the way he can take the spiritual aspects of the music of India and mix it with western blues.

I wish the CD were longer as in no time its over , thankfull for repeat button. There are 12 songs all but 2 written by Harry.

Harry says the blues isnt about feeling bad its about making you (the audience ) feel bad. Harrys songs evoke such a positve feeling that I dont know how they can be called blues.

I come away from each listening refreshed with new words and thoughts to reflect upon and melodys that fill my soul. Thanks Harry , keep on doing what you do so well.

"A Bigger Bang" tour 2005-6 & beyond...
Between a rock & a grey place...

copyright 2005 by www.montenordstrom.com

The Rolling Stones continue their amazing reign as the elder monarchs of the Rock World. Their massive "A Bigger Bang" world tour is the hottest ticket on the market & with good reason. The Stones are a guaranteed commodity & they deliver the goods every time.
The Rolling Stones retain their massive popularity through sheer hard work, despite occasional mis-fires. Its a legacy that continues to grow with each passing recording & tour. God knows they don't need the money. What makes them so inspiring to me is their passion & drive, not to mention their well of creativity, professionalism, marketing savvy & trend-setting stylism.
I know I won't miss another Stones tour. Age is not a factor here. It's an honour to see these grizzled warriors displaying their craft. Personally I hope they continue to perform into their 80s, like the old blues singers that inspired them in the first place.

A brief & obvious history: Jagger & Richards first met as school-mates in short pants when they were in primary grades in 1954, the year I was born. By the time they got a band together with Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman & Brian Jones in 1962, they had know idea they'd be spending the next 43+ years rocking together. If they continue for another 7 years they'll be celebrating 50 years as a band!
When the Stones first started rolling, they were a largely derivative unit of Blues/RnB mimicking upstarts, riding the Beatles first wave of the British Invasion into the TV sets of North America & eventually the world. Many people will disagree on this point, but John & Paul did lend the Stones their first hit with "I Wanna be Your Man".
More ragged & blues-oriented than the Pop-starry Liverpudlians, London's young Rolling Stones gave us a dangerous alternative to the Beatles cherubic image. And once Jagger & Richards charted with their first self-penned hit "Tell Me", they seldom leaned on anyone else. Their legendary hits proferred on "High Tide & Green Grass" in 1966 already revealed the group's greatness as songwriters.
The album "Their Satanic Majesty's Request", (the Stones' 1967 response to the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper) has long been considered an embarrassment. I disagree. The album did feature brilliant artwork & two classic songs: "She's a Rainbow" & "2000 Light Years From Home", but in retrospect it should have contained the singles "We Love You" & Dandelion", as well as the lesser known period piece, "Child of the Moon". With this augmentation the album would stand in much higher regard as a progressive document of the psychedelic 60's.

Open Stage with James Kasper

Visit James Kasper Website Wednesdays @ 7pm

2000 Cadboro Bay Rd

Hi everybody - Well, certainly everyone has a lot of other things on their mind at this time of year, but I must add to your list...

The Open Stage at the Oak Bay Serious Coffee (2000 Cadboro Bay Rd) is Seriously in jeopardy of ending if we don't build the attandance back up over the next few weeks. If you would like to continue to have this venue for trying out your new songs, practicing your live performance, and networking with other musicians & music fans, then this is the time to show your support. The reality is that if this open stage ends, I don't know when or where I will be able to start up a new one. And each time an acoustic venue bites the dust, it weakens our singer-songwriter scene in Victoria - a scene that is important to me and presumably also to you.

As the expression goes, "there is power in numbers," so what do you say we make a run for it over the next few weeks, starting this Wednesday, and see if we can keep the open stage going into the new year?

Many of you have showed your support over the years through successful and not-as-successful times, and I can't begin to show my appreciation for this. But I'm not asking you to do this for me - artistic outlets like this open stage exist for the community, and they cannot survive if the community decides to stay at home.

Just to end on an extra melodramatric, over-the-top note, ASK NOT WHAT YOUR OPEN STAGE CAN DO FOR YOU. ASK WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR OPEN STAGE! =0)

See you on Wednesday @ 7pm?
