Tom Lang

I met Tom Lang at the South Island Jazz Festival. It was a day an incredible day of listening great jazz music. Cherry Point Vineyards and Minstrels Music hosted the festival. Phil Newns did an excellent job of the sound and showcasing some of Vancouver Island's finest musicians.

Tom Lang performed with Paul Wainwright's group. I have to say this is one of the funkiest bands I have had the pleasure of listening to for a long time. Jamie Fletcher - Keyboards, Paul Wainwright - Sax, Steve Duben - Bass,
Eric Emde - drums and Tom Lang on guitar.
Visit Tom Lang Website - Photo credit (a family member).

Tom Lang did a wild scat solo over his guitar on the song, "On Broadway".

Steve Duben provided the low-end bass grove on songs like Low Rider, a classic War song, and Paul Simon's "Call Me Al". Paul Wainwright and his band are a group you don't want to miss. Check out his website here: www.paulwainwright.com

Tom Lang has toured with Australian legend Jimmy Barnes playing guitar keyboards and singing. They opened on 65 dates for ZZ Top throughout the USA.

He also played on the Divinyls' Monkey Grip album.

Tom Lang
Waiting for the Big One

"Waiting for the Big One" is an acoustic guitar driven CD. Tom Lang recorded it in his home studio, did the drum programming and played all of the other instruments. April Gislason sang backing vocals.

He recently won the "Male Songwriter of the Year" award at the Island Music Awards on May 14th/2005. www.islandmusicawards.com.
Tom and his band kicked off the evening with a live performance of "There's More To You" nominated for Best Song It is one of my favorite tracks of his CD.

The CD is filled with driving acoustic guitar riffs and catchy lyrics starting with the first track, "Had To Have You".

We discussed his songwriting approach for the title track Waiting For The Big One. It was inspired by a serious 6.4 earthquake in Hollywood! He found it difficult writing the lyrics for this song because he didn't want to portray the negative imagery of an earthquake. A friend suggested that he think of the song as a breakup in relationships.

I asked Tom if he could give any advice to aspiring songwriters. He said at times he would have an idea for a song but he just didn't feel it was any good. When he returned to the song later he found that there was something there that was worthwhile. His advice is to "get past it", work out your ideas and find that spark that inspired you.

Tom details the recording processes he used for each song on his website. www.tomlangmusic.com/Making.htm

You may want to check out some of the TC-Helicon equipment he used in processing harmonies: www.tc-helicon.com. Check out the VoicePro.

Tom and I also discussed the difficulty independent artists have promoting their music to radio. With limited resources and without the major capital backing by a major record label it is very difficult to get radio airplay on commercial radio. It can cost up to $3,000 to promote one song to radio nationally and that is not a guaranty that it will get played. You can request any of Tom Lang's songs on the Q100.3 FM Victoria. Tell them Cosmic Debris sent you!
