Emma and Joyce Beaton
Off the Beaton Track
Mother and daughter duo Joyce and Emma Beaton have released their debut CD "Off the Beaton Track".
I was delighted to see this release after reviewing Celtic Chaos', "Chaos In The Kitchen" CD a few months ago.
I was very fortunate to have a brief interview with Joyce and Emma prior to them going on stage at the Duncan Garage Show Room.
Joyce explained that a large portion of the sales from the CD will go to the BC Cancer Foundation. Emma & Joyce have the honor of performing at the upcoming BC Cancer Foundation Major Donor Celebration.
I ask Joyce how she felt about the recording. She explained that she had a limited budget for this recording and that some of the tracks where recorded in their living room. This would explain the relaxed feel of the performance. Scott Litlejohn, of BC Recording did an exceptional job of capturing this energetic performance.
My favorite track off the CD has to be "Hard Dang It, Hard". Emma explained that the actual name of the song is Hard Ain't It Hard. This track features Emma on Cello and Banjo. Emma uses a flailing claw hammer technique that gave the song a very percussive sound. I hope to hear more from these two ladies in the future.
You can catch their performance at their CD release of "Off The Beaton Track" Sept. 24th (fundraiser for cancer research) at the Oceanside Community Arts Council, in Parksville.
Emma and Joyce will also be performing Oct. 6th at the Dancing Bean in Chemainus. Make sure you catch their show. You wont be disappointed.

Canadian Satellite Radio
Ross Davies named vice president of programming for Canadian Satellite Radio
Toronto – Canadian Satellite Radio (CSR) is proud to announce the appointment of Ross Davies as vice president of programming. In this role, he will be responsible for overseeing all originally-produced and acquired programming on the service and overseeing the programming and production studios that CSR will build across the country.
“We are thrilled that Ross has agreed to join our launch team as our leader for creative and strategic content,” said Stephen Tapp, president and COO of CSR. “He is recognized as a best-in-class, innovative programmer in the Canadian radio industry and we know that he will add to Canadian Satellite Radio’s vision of becoming the number one satellite radio provider in Canada.”
Davies has more than 30 years experience in the programming industry. Most recently, he is president of The Davies Company, where he provides strategic consulting for a number of clients, including Standard Radio, Maritime Broadcasting and the Canadian Association of Broadcasters. Prior to heading up his own consulting firm, Davies served more than 20 years at CHUM Limited, most recently as vice president of programming, CHUM Group Radio, where he was directly responsible for all programming aspects of the CHUM radio division. Davies has also served as president of the Ontario Association of Broadcasters, the inaugural Chair of the Radio Starmaker Fund, first vice president of the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) and is currently a member of the Music Education committee for CARAS.
Throughout his career, Davies has been honoured with a number of awards, including Station of the Year and Program Director of the Year. His innovative thinking has led him to be the co-creator of the original Jack/Bob format with the launch of Bob-FM in Winnipeg and he is credited with creating of Canada’s number one morning radio show, Roger, Rick and Marilyn on CHUM-FM Toronto.
With the federal Cabinet’s decision to allow CSR’s licence, originally granted by the CRTC on June 16, 2005, CSR plans to launch its satellite radio service across Canada by the 2005 Christmas season.
About Canadian Satellite Radio
Canadian Satellite Radio (CSR) is Canada’s premier satellite radio service. It is owned and operated by Canadian John I. Bitove, and received a licence from the CRTC in June 2005 to offer the XM Satellite Radio subscription radio service in French and English to all Canadians via satellite. CSR creates unique content to be broadcast across North America and works in partnership with XM Satellite Radio of the United States, which is the leading satellite radio provider in the U.S.
For more information about CSR, visit www.cdnsatrad.com.
Independent artists won a huge CRTC victory when Satellite radio was approved for licensing in Canada about two months ago. We were thrilled that there was an indie-friendly radio alternative coming to Canada. The CRTC broke new ground with the following requirements:
* At least 8 original channels must be produced in Canada (on each satellite service)
* There must be 85% Canadian Content on each of those 8 channels
* At least 25% of CANCON music must be new Canadian musical selections
* A further 25% of the CANCON music must be by emerging Canadian artists!!!
* 5% of Satellite GROSS revenues to initiatives for the development of Canadian talent
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
We need for you to tell Federal Cabinet what you think. It's very easy to do. Please visit http://www.cdnsatrad.com and it will be self explanatory. They've set up a system with all the addresses ready to go. All you need to do is tell the politicians what you think about Satellite radio. We all know politicians need to feel the heat before they stand up to special interests.
Even if you disagree with the majority of unsigned artists and would prefer Satellite radio not come to Canada, you should have your voice be heard. Independent artists are being trampled on by the old guard and we need to get as many of us as possible to stand up and be heard!
Good luck,
Gregg Terrence

Tiller's Folly
A Fine Kettle Of Fish
I was delightfully surprised when I received this DVD/CD package in the mail. This is not your typical pop group video that you see lining the walls in music stores, or on your TV.
I like DVD.
This is a high-energy romp into the world of Celtic music. This music is guaranteed to pick you up and keep you high till the last note is played.
Filmed and recorded live at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery, Steveston, BC, A Fine Kettle Of Fish captures Tiller's Folly at their best in this live DVD/CD. Included are stories, songs, Irish dancers and multimedia. Special features include The Spirit of Sail music video and interviews with the band.
The DVD/CD package captures the exceptional musicianship and showmanship of this live performance. I love DVDs. I especially enjoyed zooming in on Nolan Murray's fingers as he rips into a solo on The Ghost of Road Island.
The arrangement of Ashokan Farewell is a beautiful melody that will tug at your heart. Jay Unger wrote this fiddle waltz. For more information on the Jay Ungar & Molly Mason's, music and the Ashokan Fiddle & Dance Camps go here: http://www.ashokan.org/ashokan/camp.shtml
Laurence Knight is a great bass player with amazing chops. He is a veteran musician who has played and toured with some of the best in the Canadian music scene. His bass solo on "Road to Skidigate" was awesome.
Bruce Coughlan strong songwriting and vocals are the foundation of this group. His Irish wood flute playing on Skidgate can be summarized in one word, Beautiful!
Eric Reed proved his versatility by adding electric and electric slide guitar, mandolin, acoustic guitar and vocals to the songs, completing the sound of the group.
Jamie Sitar at Suite Sound Labs did an excellent job of mastering the live CD, capturing all the nuances of the room and boosting the vocals where they should be, up front. The CD features two bonus tracks Mormond Braes and Auld Lang Syne.
There is a whole lot of music in this package, enough to entertain you and your friends for many evenings.

If you like this style of music I recommend that you check out Jamie RT, Celtic Cahos, and Emma & Joyce Beaton.

Are you Missing CBC & Radio-Canada?
A new vision for Canadian broadcasting
The CBC is in crisis and we've got to act NOW to help save it!
When you look behind the conflicting claims of management and union, the real cause of this labour dispute is money. The CBC is desperately short of cash because the Martin government has short-changed it. Yet just this morning there were newspaper reports that the government is headed for another massive surplus this year.
Can I ask you to please do two important things, right away?
First, send a message to Paul Martin telling him we want his government to provide CBC with the money it needs so its employees can get back to work providing us with quality Canadian programming on both radio and TV.
Second, tell everyone you know about this campaign. Please forward this message to them or ask them to visit www.OurCBC.ca and send a message to the Prime Minister. To get the government to act, we have to mobilize every single Canadian who cares about the CBC. If you click HERE we'll send your friends an e-mail for you.
